Underlying Shapes

Imaginary shapes sometimes present themselves to a viewer while observing a painting. These shapes are not necessarily painted in the work but instead are conjured up by the viewer as the mind superimposes a shape or shapes onto the work through eye movements. These are underlying structural shapes. Of these, the largest perceived shape that covers a majority of the painting’s surface can be called its overriding shape. This may then contain and hold together smaller subdivision shapes. While we are viewing negative spaces in the work, these underlying shapes emerge in our periphery and are not always visible at first. Geometric shapes such as diamonds, circles and squares are some common ones, along with other shapes such as S curves and pyramids. Even a minimal color field painting will evoke geometry while viewing. American minimalist Mark Rothko utilized squares within squares in many of his rectangular-shaped color field paintings.
